Chalky Percher

Diplacodes trivialis, commonly referred to as the Chalky Percher, is a captivating species of dragonfly belonging to the family Libellulidae and is very common in the Maldives. Found across diverse ecosystems ranging from the Seychelles to Australia, this enchanting insect epitomizes the rich biodiversity of its habitats.

Description: The Chalky Percher exhibits remarkable sexual dimorphism. Males boast a mesmerizing blue hue, while females showcase a striking green coloration. With a body length ranging from 1.7 to 2.1 cm, this dragonfly captivates observers with its vibrant colors and graceful flight.

Habitat and Distribution: The Chalky Percher thrives in a variety of habitats, including small water puddles, reservoirs, and open spaces. Its distribution spans across regions such as the Seychelles, Oman, United Arab Emirates, China, Japan, India, and southwards to New Guinea and Australia. In the Maldives, it contributes to the rich biodiversity of the islands, adding to the allure of its natural landscapes.

Conservation Status: Despite its wide distribution, the Chalky Percher is considered of Least Concern by the IUCN. This classification reflects its stable population and adaptable nature, highlighting the resilience of this enchanting species amidst environmental changes.

Local Names: In Noonu Lhohi, one of the islands of the Maldives, the Chalky Percher is affectionately known as “furo dhandi”, showcasing the intimate connection between local communities and the biodiversity that surrounds them.
